This Hurricane, V7467 was flown by the legendary Douglas Bader during September
1940 in the later stages of the Battle of Britain. 242 Squadron mainly comprising
Canadian personnel was part of 12 Group Fighter Command. During the Summer
of 1940 it was based at Coltishall and then Duxford. Whilst out-performed
by the German Messerschmitt Bf 109e in all but manoeuvrability it was well
liked by most of its pilots for its ability to sustain a remarkable amount
of damage. The only Fighter Command Victoria Cross of WW2 was won by a Hurricane
pilot flying a severely damaged and burning plane a real testament to its
strength.
